Gender Smart Village

SERVICES

Our "Gender-Smart Village Planning" initiative is driven by a deep respect for the often unacknowledged needs of a segment of our population that has quietly supported communities for generations. This group's economic contributions are essential to community well-being, poverty reduction, and the creation of safer living environments. Their unpaid labor has been an unsung pillar of the 'formal' economy. Through our initiative, we aim to empower gender through thoughtful design, ensuring that spaces are inclusive and responsive to the needs of all community members.

Our mission is rooted in reverence, as we work towards gender equality and a more prosperous, harmonious future for all.

In Manyatta, a Kenyan informal settlement, women face significant challenges that hinder their empowerment and recognition. They endure limited access to education, poor health conditions, and barriers to capital and job opportunities. Regrettably, their contributions to the workforce are often overlooked, impeding their economic and social development. This pressing issue calls for urgent action.

We must implement pilot planning strategies and gender-inclusive policies to create social spaces and support systems that empower women. By fostering gender equity, economic prosperity, and social integration in Manyatta, we can transform lives and build a brighter future for the community.

Gender Smart Village

SERVICES

This project focuses on the future of Manyatta, Kisumu's largest informal settlement, examining its rapid growth, development pressures, and untapped human capital. Rather than employing a rigid "master planning" approach, the project advocates for "pilot planning" to allow flexible, short-term goals that don't limit long-term options, emphasizing infrastructural and gender-specific issues. Acknowledging the significant role of women in Manyatta's micro-economy, the project aims to empower them and change cultural perceptions, while also highlighting the importance of social spaces and policies to reinforce the settlement's socio-economic identity.
